Ceramic Body Vessel

In this course we will consider the contours and shapes of the body as inspiration for functional vessels. The human body will be mimicked by the clay body.

We will be looking at historical paintings of the human figure and taking inspiration from bellies, hands, booties, etc to consider how these shapes could be cups, vases or bowls. We will take reference photos of ourselves to build out our piece. We will be using basic handbuilding skills, students of all levels are welcome to join.

This course is co-taught by Wow Quisqueya and Marcela Torres.

Art in Layers "Sgrafitto Bowl and Cup"

Join us for a hands-on sgraffito class where you'll get to work on two exciting projects: a big ramen or fruit bowl and an 8-ounce cup. We'll guide you through the basics of the sgraffito technique, using vibrant green, yellow, and blue colors.

You'll start by applying a base layer of one of these colors to your bowl and cup. Once the base layer is dry, you'll sketch your design right onto the surface. We'll then add a second glaze over the top. The fun part is using sgraffito to scratch away parts of the top layer, revealing the bright base color underneath and creating beautiful patterns and contrasts.

By the end of the class, you'll have two unique pieces that showcase your creativity. Whether you're new to ceramics or looking to try something different, this class offers a great way to explore your artistic side in a friendly, supportive environment.Light snacks/beverages are included.

You will receive one big bowl and tall cup.

Sweet Artistry ; Luk Chup Making Workshop

Luk chup (also commonly called Thai marzipan or look choop) is a Thai dessert that is made from a mung bean paste and molded into little fruits and vegetables. Its technique is derived from Portuguese marzipan (learned from early Portuguese intervention back in the 1600s) but because almonds weren’t historically grown in Thailand, the base of recipe was replaced with mung beans.

Come join Ali Domrongchai, food writer and Thai food historian, on March 15th to learn the art of molding and making luk chup (and to take some home for yourself). There will also be additional desserts there to snack on throughout the workshop.

(Luk chup is both vegan and gluten-free.)

A Journey Through Modern Kintsugi
Feb

A Journey Through Modern Kintsugi

Kintsugi, or "golden joinery," is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. Behind these techniques lies a deeper philosophical sense of embracing imperfections and appreciating flaws. In our modern world, the craft of repairing is slowly disappearing, as we consume more of everything, including our relationships. We invite you to take a moment to listen to your broken feelings and transform them into new forms of beauty.

In this class, we will explore modern kintsugi techniques, as the traditional method takes a longer time. Our goal is for you to understand the philosophy of repairing both objects and emotions. You are welcome to bring your own clean, broken pieces or something meaningful you wish to break and transform. If you don't have any objects (bowls, vases, cups, etc.), we are happy to provide one for you.

We keep this class intimate so we can listen to each other's words or silence. Please come with an open heart.

Class space is limited to six people, and due to the special nature of this class, there are no refunds.

We will provide beverages, wine, and light snacks.
